News Notes and Spins – May 1, 2013

chrisk w new hatIt hasn’t been a good month in our scene, I’m sorry to say.  No sooner did we hear about the passing of legendary concert promoter Barry Fey, than we heard that long time scenester and bartender Chris Haney was shot to death while breaking up a fight at a Denny’s in Denver.   The Denver Post and Westword have covered these stories admirably, so I won’t attempt to re-cover them here.  It all sure did amount to a lot of heartbreak though as we ended the month, that otherwise had lots to celebrate.

Okay it’s official; I took the leap of faith after years of folks asking if they could get The Colorado Sound online…. here’s the whole thing … THE COLORADO SOUND RADIO & TV  … of course, like any other broadcaster, it does take funding to keep it on the air – FUNDING AND SPONSORSHIPS.

The show that is heard throughout the state on participating stations will continue to be the hallmark program presenting the hottest new releases every week, as well as choice cuts from over the past 50 years.  So, if you want to hear what’s NEW and BREAKING this week – you’ll need to dial up KRFC (Fort Collins), KOTO (Telluride), KDNK (Carbondale/Glenwood Springs), KWMV (Westcliffe), or KFVR (Pueblo).

The stats are looking fine too all the way around … this site generated a new monthly record for the month of April with over 1600 unique page views.  The Colorado Sound Live365 in its first month had over 2500 unique page views, and over 1050 stream starts with an average listening time of 17 mins.  The record number of streams for one day was 97.  The station is capable of handling 500 non-VIP listeners at any one time.  Overall, the Colorado Sound finished the month ranked #2282 on Live365 among 5500 stations.

We had ONE person sign up to become a VIP listener.  We need 15 a month for the station to pay for itself, or other forms of funding to kick in.   Please spread the word; every donation helps.  ALSO … the new TOP40 goes live today, and there’s been some adds to other segments.. so do check it out.

My summer sure is shaping up.  I’m now booked to be at over 20 events this summer – and just had to turn down another 10 because I just don’t have that many open Friday nights.  Next festival on the schedule is Saturday June 1 – Sunday June 2 when I’ll be hosting the CHUN stage at the 42nd Annual CHUN People’s Fair – I think this is my 10th year hosting this stage now.  I’ll be in Fort Collins every Thursday night from May 30-August 8 hosting the Thursday Night Live series, capped off by the 25th Annual Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest celebration Aug 16-18. Along the way, I’ll also produce and host the Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival on Aug 3rd, featuring The Samples, Face, The Afrosippi Band with Erica Brown, After Midnight Jazz Band, Jeff Brinkman Band, Jaden Carlson, and Jake Miles.

That’s if for me …

STATION NEWS

kgnu logoKGNU is celebrating 35 Years on air May 22nd. We will have an open house all day with birthday cake, ice cream and coffee. Noam Chomsky is speaking at the Central Presbytyrian Church in Denver on Tuesday, May 7th. This is a fundraiser for the station as part of our birthday month and tickets are available at www.kgnu.org.

We will have a special live broadcast of our Blues Legacy program from Cafe Sole (Table Mesa Shopping Center, South Boulder) on Friday, May 17th. The Boulder Blues Trio (John March, Chris Engelmann and Jay Forrest) will be joined by many special guests, including: Colorado music icon Chris Daniels and Denver blues & jazz singer extraordinaire Robert Johnson. Tune in Friday, May 10th, 6:00-9:00 PM.

koto shield (3)KOTO is happy to introduce our new Executive Director, Dina Coates Koebler, to radio land! Dina’s extensive background in non-profit management and fundraising makes her the perfect fit. She’s been visiting Telluride from Springfield, IL for years and decided to shake things up and apply for the open position!

Downstairs at 207 North Pine Street, the venerable, purple KOTO house is undergoing a remodel, which will feature more, private office space, a brand-spanking new production room for our KOTO News team and electrical wiring that will no longer be a hazard to our building’s health!

Speaking of news, longtime KOTO News Director Stephen Barrett has, like his idol The King, left the building. We are sad to see him go, but wish him well in his re-invention back East. We hope he’ll return from time to time to be part of our Live Broadcasts of the Telluride Bluegrass and Telluride Blues and Brews Festivals.  Taking the reins from Stephen is Laura Colbert, who has tons of experience in public affairs programming in public radio back in New Hampshire (fer damn sher!). Caitlin Ketel joins Laura in the part-time reporter position.

Telluride’s newest festival, The Ride is this July 13 and 14 in our beautiful Telluride Town Park. Headliners include David Byrne and St. Vincent, Rodrigo and Gabriela, Cake, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Steve Earle and much more! The festival is produced in partnership with KOTO-FM. We’d love to see you join in the fun and make The Ride’s second year a smashing success. More info at www.koto.org

KRZAI’m Mike Clifford, and I just took over as Music Director here at community radio KRZA Alamosa/Taos (“connecting cultures along the upper Rio Grande) on Monday, 04/29. I’m still working out my exact schedule, but, since I’m doing the morning show, too, I’m usually here from 8am to 9am M-F, if you can get up that early to call. I’ve actually been in the radio business much longer than seems possible, given my youthful, energetic and enthusiastic bearing ;-) . In any case, I remember things like getting Fluid records on vinyl from Sub Pop – because we didn’t have CD players at KRUX, in Las Cruces, NM, where I was MD at the time. In any case, I’m excited to be back “in the fray” as Chris K. said (or should that be Fray?), and looking forward to being in touch with folks. Thanks!

TOP 6 VIDEO PICKS – APRIL

Unfortunately, I’m having a major problem embedding a YouTube playlist.  I’m not sure why, since I’ve done it before.  Pls forgive the “mess” while I fix the leak in my brain.  In the meantime follow the link to the current Pick 6 here …

The Colorado Sound S7 EP13 April 2013

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteSome great new music broke on this week’s show – including the first single from Rob Drabkin‘s upcoming 2nd full length due out in June … and a debut by Durango resident Thom Chacon that features Bob Dylan’s legendary rhythm section.  Also shared this week, another cut from the new Paper Bird album, “Rooms.”

In News & Notes, April is Public Radio Music Month.  Please text, msg, email, call your local public radio station and thank them for supporting Colorado Music.  Two major Colorado music events to post about … FoCoMX on April 19 and 20 … and the Upper Colfax Root 40 Music Festival and Expo, April 22-28.  I’ve been invited to speak on two panels during those events, on April 20, and April 22.

I did not come across a new video this week.  I have been, however, enamored of SHEL’s re-imagination of the Led Zepplin classic “Battle of Evermore” … and happened on a video of the girls performing it about two years ago …

The Colorado Sound S7 EP12 + New Video/Album Pick

grizzly goat adamsMarch 31 — Sunday — Happy Easter (if you celebrate such things).  Today is also the day when I have to finish up the NEWS NOTES & SPINS for April 1.  Doesn’t mean though that I neglected this week’s playlist post or something new that hit my desk yesterday while I was working on the spins data.

In this week’s show I pulled a tribute to Richie Furay — from his days with Buffalo Springfield from their last album, and from Poco’s first album.  Is is these incredible early bands in Richie’s career that have established him as one of the most legendary of Colorado’s musicians.  He’s in the studio now with John Macy and friends finishing up a new solo effort due for release this year.  I have no doubt it will be yet another legacy record in his career, although for sure not all his previously released solo efforts have been all that…

VIDEO / NEW RELEASE OF THE WEEK
I’m a junkie.  I’m always looking for that next new hit, that next “wow” moment that releases all the feel good at one time … sometimes it’s brutally ecstatic, but then you get the occasional “on second thought” moment when you realize that there’s always that next great hit and maybe this one wasn’t all that – ya know?

Durango singer-songwriter Thom Chacon just breathed his voice on me and released that energy.  I think that what I’m hearing is pretty significant – like the first time I heard Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” in ’88 or Son Volt’s “Trace” in ’95.  Those are seminal recordings, rare performances …anything that’s compared to them had better bring it – one shot – one hit – all the feel good in one huge rush.  And it had better be worth more than one dose …otherwise it’s just another pissed load.

The album production notes really are the tie-off … “This record was recorded using all discrete transistor and vacuum tube technology in an all analogue format with Bob Dylan’s fabulous rhythm section (Tony Garner on bass and George Recile on drums).”  The record is finished masterfully and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl.

Before you even get to the notes though, it’s Thom who’s offering …that early free “what’s this” thing that happens before the full rush comes on …it happens within half a song, half of the first song, the 2:29 “Innocent Man.”  It’s in the voice, in the way he tells the story.  In “American Dream,” the first official single and video off the album, a sense of fatalism comes into the picture with lines like “I’m worth more dead cuz baby I owe.”  “Juarez, Mexico” could be a sister song to some of Dave Alvin’s folkier tomes.  “Alcohol” stings as you know it does when the needle breaks the flesh – “oh, I’m sick, I’m shivering and I want nothing more than to spend time with you.”  It only works if it’s pure …and Thom is every bit that – pure.  At least that’s the hope now, isn’t it?

All in smooth haze and all, what I’m hearing tonight has a transcendent quality …and if not for the crowded bazaar today it seems on first blush that it could easily be considered in the same vein as…

…now, admitting you have a problem, as the first step to recovery, only works if you want to recover, right?

…yeah, no …not this time …not tonight.

Maybe tomorrow.

The Colorado Sound – S7/EP08 March 2013

grizzly goat adamsHi.  New Instagram shot … shows my “Grizzly Goat Adams” side my wife says … LOL .  Ok…not much time to sit and chat this morning.  The monthly news, notes, and Top 40 is now 2 days past schedule, and I’m only hoping I’ll get it done sometime today (Sunday March 3).  In the meantime I received more new music this past week than I had time to listen to.  But I did manage to get a fair amount into the show again this week.  Unfortunately, as is sometimes the case, not everything you hear this week will be heard again sometime soon.  I’ve already got 342 songs curated for 2013, and I’m not done importing.  I have 538 in catalog from 2012.  I’ll be doing some weeding this week to be sure.

In the meantime … news … Wendy Woo had surgery yesterday.  A late night post from her husband Charles Snyder while I was at the Skylark doing sound for Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams caught my attention… he told me in a follow up “she had to have surgery on her vocal cords to remove polyps. She had to cancel her next twelve shows which she’s really bumbed about, however the surgery went well and she should be back in a couple of months.”  Good luck to Wendy.  She’s been a staple in our scene for over a decade now, and continues to be a crowd favorite.

Speaking of Halden Wofford and the Hi*Beams – they spent the day yesterday, and will be back spending the day today, at Might Fine Productions finishing tracks for their upcoming new release.  The guys are really excited, and based on what I’ve heard of new material done live it will be another fan favorite.  Don’t expect a lengthy song list this time though – this will be a “smaller” batch of songs and there may be <hint fellows> vinyl in the offering (?).    Also finishing up mixing for a new album at Colin Bricker’s place => Lionel Young Band … bassist Kim Stone blasted out Thursday “Mixing the new Lionel Young Band CD at MFP Studio’s.”  Nice :)

Bumped into Kerry and Paul from the Informants last night also … could a new EP be in the making???

Birthday wishes this week to:  Jazz vocalist Erienne Romaine (22).  CJ Nicolai (Reckless Red).  Greta Cornet (FoCoMA, Road 34, 3 Twins Broadband, 12 Cents for Marvin, Mama Lenny & the Remedy). Rebecca Folsom (50).  Chris Citrus Sautoff  (Swallow Hill instructor and all around funk-meister guitarist and sitarist). Pianist Jon Wirtz (33).  Bassist Glenn Tapia (44).  And Colorado native and songstress Katie Herzig is celebrating… congrats to all our friends and family in the scene celebrating one great year of life among us.

I think that’s it … now for our Video Pick of the Week … and the Playlist … the NEWS NOTES & SPINS column should be up tonight … tomorrow morning at the latest, I promise.

The Colorado Sound – S7/EP07 Feb 2013

chris k july 2010Brand new music this week EXCLUSIVELY on the Colorado Sound from White Water Ramble.  I can’t wait for you all to hear the latest from Pat Sites and the boys so go below and stream the lead track Dear Mr. Bankman.  I’ve know Pat since he started this band back about 2001 when I was at Archer’s in Fort Collins and gave them some of their first gigs.  Pat’s really grown as a picker and songwriter and this album represents a HUGE leap forward – featuring such notables as Andy Hall (Infamous Stringdusters), Bill McKay (Derek Trucks, Leftover Salmon), Andy Thorn (Leftover Salmon, Emmit-Nershi, Grant Farm), John Macy, the Euforquestra horns … produced by Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) and recorded at John Macy’s Silo Sounds in Denver.

In the spirit of full disclosure I will be sending out the new White Water Ramble and Lisa Bell records through my Rocky Mountain Music Network service to some 50-60 djs around the state.  For a full list of records I’ve sent out to radio on behalf of a band/artist, see the Rocky Mountain Music Network page.

Happy birthday wishes this week go out to:
Tim Hanauer (35)
Branden Sipes (30)
Jim Messina  (57)
Pete Wernick (67)
Edd Catfish Kray (67)
Scott McCormick
Rich Ross
Pattie Fiasco

The featured video of the week comes from Lisa Bell’s new album The Italian Project.  A portion of Lisa’s proceeds from download sales will benefit animal adoption agencies.  For the first two months, the proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, the shelter from which the stars of the film, Kona and Joey, were adopted.

The Colorado Sound – S7/EP06 Feb 2013 + Video of the Week

chris k july 2010I very often discover new music for this show by browsing multiple publications and the published playlists of a number of regional radio stations.  When I find acts listed as “local” that I’m unfamiliar with I always make it a point of looking them up online.  I’ve discovered many acts that way, several of which have become favorites of mine on the show.  I like using sites like Bandcamp and Soundcloud more than any other when it comes to not only discovery, but also sharing new music here with you.  I also like using YouTube.  I wish more acts would utilize these sites – it makes sharing much easier, and more direct.

One such act I discovered this past week is Esther Sparks & the Whiskey Remedy.  Upon watching their wonderful video “Back to Life” I was immediately uplifted – making it my feel good video of the week, and the current leading contender for Video of the Month when I publish the next News Notes & Spins column on March 1.  Enjoy … I hope it brings you as much “feel good” as it brought me.
