News Notes and Spins – May 1, 2013

chrisk w new hatIt hasn’t been a good month in our scene, I’m sorry to say.  No sooner did we hear about the passing of legendary concert promoter Barry Fey, than we heard that long time scenester and bartender Chris Haney was shot to death while breaking up a fight at a Denny’s in Denver.   The Denver Post and Westword have covered these stories admirably, so I won’t attempt to re-cover them here.  It all sure did amount to a lot of heartbreak though as we ended the month, that otherwise had lots to celebrate.

Okay it’s official; I took the leap of faith after years of folks asking if they could get The Colorado Sound online…. here’s the whole thing … THE COLORADO SOUND RADIO & TV  … of course, like any other broadcaster, it does take funding to keep it on the air – FUNDING AND SPONSORSHIPS.

The show that is heard throughout the state on participating stations will continue to be the hallmark program presenting the hottest new releases every week, as well as choice cuts from over the past 50 years.  So, if you want to hear what’s NEW and BREAKING this week – you’ll need to dial up KRFC (Fort Collins), KOTO (Telluride), KDNK (Carbondale/Glenwood Springs), KWMV (Westcliffe), or KFVR (Pueblo).

The stats are looking fine too all the way around … this site generated a new monthly record for the month of April with over 1600 unique page views.  The Colorado Sound Live365 in its first month had over 2500 unique page views, and over 1050 stream starts with an average listening time of 17 mins.  The record number of streams for one day was 97.  The station is capable of handling 500 non-VIP listeners at any one time.  Overall, the Colorado Sound finished the month ranked #2282 on Live365 among 5500 stations.

We had ONE person sign up to become a VIP listener.  We need 15 a month for the station to pay for itself, or other forms of funding to kick in.   Please spread the word; every donation helps.  ALSO … the new TOP40 goes live today, and there’s been some adds to other segments.. so do check it out.

My summer sure is shaping up.  I’m now booked to be at over 20 events this summer – and just had to turn down another 10 because I just don’t have that many open Friday nights.  Next festival on the schedule is Saturday June 1 – Sunday June 2 when I’ll be hosting the CHUN stage at the 42nd Annual CHUN People’s Fair – I think this is my 10th year hosting this stage now.  I’ll be in Fort Collins every Thursday night from May 30-August 8 hosting the Thursday Night Live series, capped off by the 25th Annual Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest celebration Aug 16-18. Along the way, I’ll also produce and host the Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival on Aug 3rd, featuring The Samples, Face, The Afrosippi Band with Erica Brown, After Midnight Jazz Band, Jeff Brinkman Band, Jaden Carlson, and Jake Miles.

That’s if for me …

STATION NEWS

kgnu logoKGNU is celebrating 35 Years on air May 22nd. We will have an open house all day with birthday cake, ice cream and coffee. Noam Chomsky is speaking at the Central Presbytyrian Church in Denver on Tuesday, May 7th. This is a fundraiser for the station as part of our birthday month and tickets are available at www.kgnu.org.

We will have a special live broadcast of our Blues Legacy program from Cafe Sole (Table Mesa Shopping Center, South Boulder) on Friday, May 17th. The Boulder Blues Trio (John March, Chris Engelmann and Jay Forrest) will be joined by many special guests, including: Colorado music icon Chris Daniels and Denver blues & jazz singer extraordinaire Robert Johnson. Tune in Friday, May 10th, 6:00-9:00 PM.

koto shield (3)KOTO is happy to introduce our new Executive Director, Dina Coates Koebler, to radio land! Dina’s extensive background in non-profit management and fundraising makes her the perfect fit. She’s been visiting Telluride from Springfield, IL for years and decided to shake things up and apply for the open position!

Downstairs at 207 North Pine Street, the venerable, purple KOTO house is undergoing a remodel, which will feature more, private office space, a brand-spanking new production room for our KOTO News team and electrical wiring that will no longer be a hazard to our building’s health!

Speaking of news, longtime KOTO News Director Stephen Barrett has, like his idol The King, left the building. We are sad to see him go, but wish him well in his re-invention back East. We hope he’ll return from time to time to be part of our Live Broadcasts of the Telluride Bluegrass and Telluride Blues and Brews Festivals.  Taking the reins from Stephen is Laura Colbert, who has tons of experience in public affairs programming in public radio back in New Hampshire (fer damn sher!). Caitlin Ketel joins Laura in the part-time reporter position.

Telluride’s newest festival, The Ride is this July 13 and 14 in our beautiful Telluride Town Park. Headliners include David Byrne and St. Vincent, Rodrigo and Gabriela, Cake, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Steve Earle and much more! The festival is produced in partnership with KOTO-FM. We’d love to see you join in the fun and make The Ride’s second year a smashing success. More info at www.koto.org

KRZAI’m Mike Clifford, and I just took over as Music Director here at community radio KRZA Alamosa/Taos (“connecting cultures along the upper Rio Grande) on Monday, 04/29. I’m still working out my exact schedule, but, since I’m doing the morning show, too, I’m usually here from 8am to 9am M-F, if you can get up that early to call. I’ve actually been in the radio business much longer than seems possible, given my youthful, energetic and enthusiastic bearing ;-) . In any case, I remember things like getting Fluid records on vinyl from Sub Pop – because we didn’t have CD players at KRUX, in Las Cruces, NM, where I was MD at the time. In any case, I’m excited to be back “in the fray” as Chris K. said (or should that be Fray?), and looking forward to being in touch with folks. Thanks!

TOP 6 VIDEO PICKS – APRIL

Unfortunately, I’m having a major problem embedding a YouTube playlist.  I’m not sure why, since I’ve done it before.  Pls forgive the “mess” while I fix the leak in my brain.  In the meantime follow the link to the current Pick 6 here …

NEWS NOTES and SPINS – March 1, 2013

grizzly goat adamsSunday March 3rd.  I’m a couple of days behind schedule.  Could just be the three days that February was shorted at birth.  After successfully blowing up the Y-T-D stats for unique visits in January, we lost some ground in February.  That’s cool, we still had over 40 unique visits a day on average here – not counting the activity that takes place at my FB page.

I’ve been reworking a couple of the other pages here – notably the Rocky Mountain Music Network page, which is where you can find a listing of the records I’ve sent to radio and print media in CO on behalf of artists since 2008.  Very happy to announce that the new Lisa Bell and WhiteWaterRamble releases are on the list for this  year.  There are a few more pending so stay tuned for those.

There were 28 new adds in February.  There were 27 in January.  At this rate we’d wind up with 330-360 releases being tracked for the year … which is about right.   Estimates being what they are, “we” (those of us who talk about such things) think there’s about 500 records a year released in the state from an estimated 2000 acts (from solo to full orchestra).  12 of the 28 debuts wound up in the TOP 40 most spun in February… more will likely show up in the TOP 40 for March.  I was very happy to see my friend Jon Wirtz’s new record “Tourist” do so well OTB (out of the box).  I think his debut at #7 may be the highest debut for a jazz record I’ve ever logged.

On a personal note:  I have entered a new phase in my life.  I’ve long wondered if I could enjoy a physical fitness lifestyle.. biking, working out, eating “good” (healthy) foods, not drinking, not smoking, etc … So I hit the switch in my brain and embarked on a new lifestyle.  And no, I didn’t give up the green .. a goat does need one vice LOL.  But you are likely to see me out biking this spring and summer with some buddies – or at the gym … I started at 172-174.  I’m at 161 five weeks in with a goal by Aug 1 of 145-148 and a goal by the time I hit 60 (two more years) of either a running marathon or a bike marathon.  Question:  can 60 year olds rock a sixpack?  Hmmm… guess we’ll find out.  Live healthy my friends .. catch you on the airwaves or at a show.

Do take a 30 minute break from the day and enjoy my video picks of the month.

STATION NEWS

KUNC LOGOMarch 1st marks the end of an era at KUNC (Greeley).  Nancy D’Albergaria, KUNC’s Development Director since January, 2008, is retiring. Though Nancy has been on staff for only 5 years, her involvement with the station dates back to the early 90’s, when she began as a volunteer, along with her husband Thom and their children Sean and Ann.

Nancy soon became a member of the KUNC Community Advisory Board, and served as its chair. In February 2001, Nancy co-chaired the Friends of KUNC group that raised $2 million in 20 days to purchase KUNC’s license from the University of Northern Colorado, creating Community Radio For Northern Colorado (CRNC) and ensuring that KUNC continued as an independent station.

She went on to serve on the board of CRNC from 2001-2007, including a term as board chair. Nancy’s commitment and many contributions to KUNC over the years have been invaluable in creating the station that we are today. We wish her well as she embarks on her future travels.

Carrie Saldo will be joining KUNC and RMPBS starting April 1st, as an  an arts and culture reporter (in conjunction with Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO). For the past 2 years Carrie has been the host, writer and producer of “Connecting Point” – a nightly, 30 minute interview program on PBS member station WGBY-TV in Springfield, MA. Carrie also spent 3 years at WAMC public radio in Albany, NY as the Berkshire Bureau Chief.

Luke Runyon of Aspen Public Radio will officially be joining KUNC as their first Agribusiness Reporter on Monday, March 11th (in conjunction with Harvest Public Media, a network of stations across the midwest that does Grassroots reporting on food, fuel and field (http://harvestpublicmedia.org/). Luke spent the past 18 months  working in Aspen covering general assignment, environmental and land use stories. He is already a familiar voice on our airwaves because of our collaboration with RMCR (Rocky Mountain Community Radio) and He’s also been featured on NPR several times.

KVNF logoSally Kane, executive director for KVNF (Paonia), is stepping down from her position in June to look for new life opportunities.  In her email out to RMCR (Rocky Mountain Community Radio) stations, Sally writes “We’ll be posting for my replacement and for a news position in the next couple of weeks. I’m still here for awhile so this won’t be the last you hear from me…”  Sally first appeared on the air at KVNF when she was a high school student in 1980, and has long been considered one of RMCR’s brightest executive directors. Founded in 1979, starting with 10 watts of power in a garage on a mesa overlooking the town of Paonia, KVNF has grown to serve parts of 6 rural counties with two transmitters and seven translators and thousands of watts of power.

KRFCBREAKING NEWS ADDED an hour AFTER I published …. thanks to Andrew Schneider for the update.  KRFC Development Director Danielle Hastings announced her resignation at the end of January.  She is now at FoCoMA now as their full time seasonal marketing/communications and volunteer person.  KRFC is now looking for a full time Development Director.  Full details and downloadable application at http://www.krfcfm.org/about-krfc/jobs/.   Essentially, this is a full time, 40 hour gig that pays $30,000 a year + commission to the right person.  The successful candidate should have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in a related field and/or relevant experience, with experience generating operating revenues in a corporate, nonprofit or institutional setting. Knowledge of the public radio mission and its diverse audience is an advantage, as is demonstrated success in fundraising and/or grant writing for nonprofit programs along with demonstrated success in community and professional networking.  The application deadline is March 14.

Happy Birthday Vector IllustrationHAPPY BIRTHDAY … here I thought that only one station in Colorado was having a 10 year birthday party — and lo and behold there are two.  Happy 10th birthday to KHEN (Salida) and KRFC (Fort Collins).

Locally-focused community radio, KRFC, hit Ft. Collins airwaves on March 1, 2003.  KRFC will be hosting their 10th birthday party on April 6th featuring Great American Taxi, Mama Lenny & The Remedy, and a double dose of Michael Kirkpatrick from The Holler!

KHEN held their 10th birthday party in a new location in Salida on March 2nd.  Don’t know what those folks are up to down there, but the website at http://www.khen.org hasn’t been updated since late last summer.  Hope they get it fixed so we can all enjoy knowing what they’re playing..

News Notes and Spins – December 1, 2012

Goat Jan 2012December 1, 2012 — we are now 28 days away from our Best of 2012 show on the Colorado Sound, which will air the week of  Dec 29-Jan 4 around the state.   Over the next week or so I will put up a poll so that you can pick your favorites of the past year – NOV’11-NOV’12.  I’ll take those results, add it to the list of favs by some “secret” local industry insiders, and then add them to the spins database to come up with the TOP 40 of 2012.  Should be fun.

Last month I addressed the idea that some artists who grew up here and have since moved away are still a part of the “sound” of Colorado – if not in fact, then at least in origin.  To that, I have added a new designation, (CC), to denote a Colorado Connection.  That may be someone like Sera Cahoone who moved to Seattle several years ago, or Tia Fuller who moved to New Jersey.  Some folks have lobbied that I also include in that designation recordings from local studios of artists who are not specifically a part of the scene here.  That’s an interesting one — I’ll mull it over during the next month or so.

Much thanks to new stations that have added or will be adding THE COLORADO SOUND — http://www.post303radio.com and KVNF (Paonia).  KVNF will be airing the show as fill in programming for the next couple of months, before integrating it into to their regular programming in February 2013, according to station program director Ali Lightfoot.  Watch my Facebook page for announcements on when the show will be available in that part of the state. (edit: see schedule for days, times, and stations)

In other station news: KBUT (Crested Butte) writes in the “…public affairs program “The West Elk Word” is back up and running through the winter.  Tune in Saturdays at noon for news & notes, people & places, music & the arts, recreation, and mountain culture talk straight from the heart of the West Elk Mountains.  Dal Dearmin has joined the KBUT staff as General Manager.  Dal brings years of community radio experience from KSFR in Santa Fe.  KBUT is more than thrilled to welcome Dal to the Gunnison Valley.  We’re also kicking the music blog back into gear with regular postings about popular new music on the KBUT shelves.”

I’m trying something new again this month for the monthly YouTube and Spotify feeds … The YouTube feed features 7 cuts coming in at about 30 mins and includes Paper Bird, SHEL, Rob Drabkin, Liza Oxnard, Mega Gem, The Gromet, and Roniit.  The Spotify feed is about the same length (39 mins) and includes debut releases in November from Darryl Purpose, Elephant Revival, The Gromet, The Hollyfelds, Polarity, Sera Cahoone, Ten Pound Elephant, Trout Steak Revival, and Tyler Ward.  Enjoy.

News Notes and Spins – Nov. 1, 2012

Tia Fuller, Katie Herzig, Sera Cahoone, Corey Harris, Jill Sobule, Phillip Bailey, and India.Arie, among others, all have one thing in common… they are all original Colorado natives who moved to other places… Sera to Seattle.  Tia to NYC.  Katie to Nashville.  India.Arie to Atlanta, Philip and Jill to Los Angeles… Corey first to Maine and then to Virginia.  They’re not the only ones — artists move to or move from here all the time.  Dan Fogelberg, Joe Cocker, John Denver, Glenn Frey, John Oates, Richie Furay, Stephen Stills, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tommy Bolin, and countless others have lived here… some for a couple of years, others longer; some are still here.

No one has told the story better than legendary former local rock critic, radio dj, local music historian and author, and current Colorado Music Hall of fame director G. Brown, whose book “Colorado Rocks!: A Half-Century of Music in Colorado” is a must have for anyone even casually interested in what’s gone on here musically much of the past 60 years now.  Expect to pay a few times what it originally sold for however.  The book has been out of print for at least a few years now and very good to excellent condition editions can run you $50-75 +/- …I’ve seen wrapped editions listed for upwards of $125.

Occasionally, an album from one of these artists shows up on our monthly charts.  Most recently it’s been Tia Fuller’s wonderful new album “Angelic Warrior,” which features resident and native jazz great Dianne Reeves on one vocal track, “Body and Soul.”  Katie Herzig’s latest has shown up here and there as well the past year, as has the O’Brien Party of Seven release that features former Colorado resident Tim O’Brien with sister and current Colorado residents Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore and their kids.

Columbine High School (Littleton) graduate Sera Cahoone is an accomplished singer-songwriter on the Sub Pop label out of Seattle, where she moved when she was 21.   Her latest, “Deer Creek Canyonhas been picking up some spins at KUNC and KRCC and I have no doubt will continue to pick up spins throughout the state in the coming couple of months.

The question is always, do we include those who grew up here as kids, went to our local schools, and maybe our colleges and universities, and then moved on to other places?  KUNC’s music director, Benji McPhail, made it a point – when he emailed me that they had put Sera’s new album in rotation as a Colorado artist release.   Sera’s new album, “Deer Creek Canyon” is all about the place she grew up, and where her mom still lives.  Sera may have moved to Seattle years ago, as a young woman seeking her own life and stories, but has remained a much loved native Coloradoan with a great musical story of her own to tell – largely influenced by her life and experiences here.

Still, some folks contend that unless an artist is actually living here and contributing to the live music scene they cannot justifiably be considered a “local” artist.  IF that’s the case there are a lot of acts we would have to consider as long gone and no longer local… including the likes of the Apples in Stereo (Kentucky) or Slim Cessna (Rhode Island) or Todd Park Mohr (Chicago) … hmmmm … yeah, no.  ;)

Speaking of Coloradoans who were not born here, but were raised here, went to school here, and are as much as part of who we are as anyone – legendary jazz guitarist, Denver East High School grad, and University of Northern Colorado alum Bill Frisell (born in Baltimore) has teamed up with local jazz trumpeter and Denver University alum Ron Miles (born in Indianapolis) for an exquisite album called “Quiver.”  As adventurous as it is, I expect it will do well with jazz djs around the state in November and December – watch for it.

STATION NEWS:

OpenAir 1340 on air personality and web director Brandee Castle has left her post at Colorado Public Radio.  CPR will be listing her open position on their employment page within the next couple weeks.  However, she will still be involved with OpenAir in some capacity in the future so it’s not a true goodbye.

OpenAir’s First Birthday Bash will take place at the Hi-Dive in Denver on November 9th at 9pm.  Meet the OpenAir hosts and catch live performances from A. Tom Collins, Flashbulb Fires, and Bonnie and the Beard.  Since OpenAir launched on Oct. 31, 2011, more than 80 bands, most of which have Colorado ties, have visited CPR’s Performance Studio to record their music and talk with OpenAir hosts, making them a leader in promoting music from here in Colorado on broadcast radio.

KBUT (Crested Butte) has hired a new general manager/executive director.

Okay — Time for an experiment.  I got served notice recently that it would be nice if I linked each entry to a website where folks could check out the music … that’d be a bit more time consuming than I’d prefer, so here’s a link to a playlist I have up on Spotify that features a lot of this month’s Top 40 most spun titles.  You will need a Spotify account for this to work.

VIDEO PLAYLIST This month’s video playlist begins with a classic from Victoria Woodworth, recorded at Caribou Ranch in 1980.  It also includes a new video and song from Jeff Finlin, a new video from Chris Daniels, along with Flobots, The Yawpers, The Epilogues, Churchill, SHEL, Sofie Reed, a live performance video from Leftover Salmon, Achille Lauro, and Petals of Spain.

News Notes and Spins – October 1 2012

EDIT 10/7/2012:  Welcome Radio 1190 back into the mix …. they got their Sept spins to us a bit late, but we’ll take em :) … see station spins below.

Happy autumn.  We are now about 90 days away from posting our annual Best Of the Year poll – generated by the top scoring records of the year with the results from polling regional radio djs, music journalists and assorted Colorado music fans.  I would imagine we’ll see a couple dozen new releases before we close things off on Dec 1 — so if you’re in the process of getting an album out, now is the time.

Speaking of new releases – watch for Opie Gone Christmas #4 to come out this fall – Jake Schroeder called me to say that they were working feverishly on getting it done soon – and it will include the incomparable Dianne Reeves, Chris Daniels and others.

Happy B-day Chris Daniels who turned 60 on Sept 29 …

…Jake also let me know that 99.5FM The Mountain (KQMT) has canceled Mountain Homegrown, the wonderful Colorado music program he hosted the past 9 years.  The station cited budget reasons for discontinuing the program that was on every Monday night at 10PM.

KDUR has a new music director, Stella Dickson.  Reach out to her and say hi.  KDUR is very dedicated to airing Colorado music, so getting to know Stella is important <hint>

Happy September :)   As the concert season begins its wind-down to the last few in October, I expect we’ll begin to see more releases coming out.  So, September-November are very important months as we also wind down the new release year and begin thinking about our favorite albums of the year – in anticipation of our year-end best of charts.  Hope you’ve been keeping track here and at your favorite stations around the state.  Picking this year’s best of is going to be tough.  While the total number of records to cross my desk is less than a year ago at this time, the quality of the releases this year has so far been pretty freaking amazing.  Good luck in picking your favorites.   The deadline for new record submissions for best of 2012 consideration will be October 31, giving those records at least enough time to get reviewed and/or played around the state for our annual panel of print music critics, radio personalities, and select industry purveyors.

No reports this month from KBUT (Crested Butte), KDUR (Durango), Radio 1190 (Boulder) and KUVO (Denver).  KDUR and Radio1190 staff have been busy with new admissions to their respective schools, and some of the KBUT staff took well deserved summer vacations.  A rare report from KSJD (Cortez/Mancos) – thanks to the on-air folks there for spinning enough Colorado titles to show up this month :)    Much love to those folks.  Other stations regionally have been very busy with administration/managment changes.    Here are a few job openings regionally.

News, Notes & Spins – August 1, 2012

I am brain dead right now.  It’s been one crazy major event after another all summer, with two more to go – The 5th Annual Carbon Valley Music Festival that I produce for the city of Dacono (Aug 4), and then three days of Bohemian Nights at New West Fest a week later in Fort Collins.

Anyone who’s into live music – and especially festivals that feature locally homegrown and groomed acts – are in the right place here in Colorado.  It really is a very remarkable place.  I don’t get off the Front Range too often, so I don’t know about all the events that take place in our mountain locales… but those along the Front Range are treated to a number of great events every year, culminating in what has become the premiere festival concert event for Colorado acts – Bohemian Nights at New West Fest in Fort Collins (Aug 10-12) featuring a veritable who’s who of Colorado talent including this sampling -> Air Dubai, Allegaeon, Arliss Nancy, Bad Weather California, Bunny Gang (featuring Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly), Cassie Taylor & the Soul Cavalry, Chad Price, Chuck Pyle, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Delta Sonics, Devotchka, DubSkin, Euforquestra, Fierce Bad Rabbit, Future Jazz Project, Great American Taxi, Haunted Windchimes, John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light, Juno What?!, Katie Glassman Quintet, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Liz Barnez, Megan Redmond, Mosey West, Musketeer Gripweed, Rob Drabkin, Selasee and Fafa Family, Shakedown Street, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club,  The Lionel Young Band, The Patti Fiasco, The Swayback, Wendy Woo … and fo’reals many many others (some 90 in all I believe).

And since this column is about Colorado Music & Radio – a big ovation to KRFC Fort Collins for broadcasting many of the sets live on the air during this year’s 3 day event.

I’m equally as proud and enthusiastic about the one day event we put on in Dacono  – For our 5th annual event we’ve added a Colorado ONLY spirits tasting and competition event (including among others 303 and Breckenridge distilleries) – and a youth music, arts and entertainment venue of its own focused on youth performances and education.  The inaugural venue this year will be very music focused, and presented partly by the wonderful Colorado Blues Society who will be presenting music educators Ronnie Shellist and Dan Treanor … our main stage show features the Lionel Young Band, 3 Twins Broadband, Quemando, Buckner Funken Jazz, Katie Glassman Quintet, Bad Brad & the Fat Cats, and the Danny Meyer Trio.

It was an unusually slow month for new titles.  I had to look at Aug 2 2011 to confirm – but yeah, we only had about 1/3 as many new titles added this year as last.  No reason that I can figure out either.  It’s just been a slow year for new releases it seems.  By this time last year, I was tracking 348 current titles.  This year I’m tracking 302.  That looks like about a 12% dropoff Y-T-D.  The upside there is that there are more Colorado titles being reported as played.  July 2012=157 titles reported as played vs. 136 in July 2011.  That may be partly due to the number of reporting stations, and the emergence of Open Air 1340 on the scene the past year – regardless, it’s great to see so many wonderful titles getting played around the state.

Speaking of new stations reporting – welcome back Radio 1190 (Boulder).  The station is under new management, since former GM Mike Flanagan moved onto Open Air 1340 – and they’ve got a new music director who is very excited about sharing what Colorado titles they’re supporting on air.  To submit for airplay consideration, reach out to …

KBUT (Crested Butte) is happy to announce the hiring of its new General Manager, Jerry Lunsford. Jerry brings extensive experience in community radio, most recently with KWMR in West Marin, California. Coloradoans may be familiar with Jerry as the longtime organizer of Camp Runamuck at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

KHEN (Salida) has begun a planned multi-year collaboration with the CSO (Colorado Symphony Orchestra) to bring Colorado’s highest quality classical music to the Salida area.  The events will include a special daytime concert and other music education opportunities for local public-, private- and home-schooled children.  The collaboration reinforces KHEN’s role as a vital community asset and voice, and enhances Salida’s reputation as a destination to hear the finest classical music. It also enables the CSO to move towards becoming a truly statewide orchestra in Colorado, serving all citizens. The collaboration further aligns perfectly with, and augments, Salida’s new Creative District, one of only two such districts in the state. To complement and promote the concert series, a new KHEN radio program dedicated exclusively to recordings of the CSO, is currently being developed and is planned to begin sometime this fall.  Watch for details.  For more information, contact KHEN at 719-539-1069. News, Notes and Spins – July 1, 2012

We are now officially half way through 2012.  I always wind up thinking what’s tracking HOT for the year about now … what are going to be the top releases of 2012 before anything new breaks big after the summer season.  So far, the following records are leading the score board.

The Lumineers – #1 in June, May, April and March spins.  “The Lumineers” has been the most successful national export of Colorado music this year, so far, followed somewhat closely by Tennis‘ latest “Young and Old.”  The album has managed a top 10 position in July, and top 4 going back to March and has placed the band in some pretty impressive national spotlights.  Otis Taylor is among the handful of top 5 acts so far in 2012 also.  “Otis Taylor’s Contraband” manages a top 10 finish this month, with top 5 finishes in each of the preceding four months.

So far in the first six months, other releases that have managed to make a significant impact statewide have been those by Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Bad Weather California, Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams, Longest Day of the Year, and Leftover Salmon.  I also expect we’ll see the O’Brien Party of 7 extend their top 5 debut this month into a top 5 or 10 release for the year.

STATION NEWS AND NOTES

No word yet from KAFM (Grand Junction) on their search for a new program director.

Regional market vet Benji McPhail has been named music director and on air host at national top 20 ranked public radio station KUNC (Greeley).  Benji recently had been doing weekends at Open Air 1340 (Denver), preceded by stints at KGNU (Boulder), KCUV (Denver), KKPL/99.9 The Planet (Fort Collins), and KBCO – now well over more than a decade doing radio regionally.  Within only a couple of weeks since arriving at KUNC, the on-air sound has changed noticeably.

Long gone are the days when only marginally popular styles of sedate classical and down tempo acoustic music dominated KUNC’s set lists – today it’s a much more steady dose of  records that would likely make many critics best of lists from throughout the past 40+ years – emphasis on current/contemporary  adult .  Benji has great ears … and with just him and Wendy Wham on the mics, the mid-day energy has noticeably brightened as a result of a more contemporary focus on the music …and Benji’s many years on the air regionally at more commercially oriented stations.

KUNC has supported some regional artists throughout the years – especially favoring the likes of guitarists Dave Beegle and Jerry Palmer out of Loveland and Fort Collins … and singer songwriters such as NoCo residents Wendy Woo and Liz Barnez. And I know that Benji has supported music from here in Colorado at every stop he’s made, going back to when we first met in 2001 and he was the program director at KKPL.  Benji has settled into one very classy deal with KUNC … this will be fun to listen to.

Check out their playlists now – http://kunc.org/programs/kunc-music

In somewhat less happy news – legendary market PD John Hayes is out as program director at KRFC (Fort Collins).  The board of directors executive committee decided to not retain John – reversing the board decision in 2010 to install a professional programming staff.

In a letter to its members, executive director Brian Hughes says the station will go back to a programming committee approach – a direction that was abandoned by a previous board; “…the duties of the Program Director will be distributed between key volunteers (Genre Captains/ Programming Committee) BOD Committee (Community Advisory Board) and ED.”

The Community Advisory Board cannot determine policy for the station, and cannot be made up of volunteers at the station, so it won’t have any skin in the game other than to provide feedback to the board of directors on if the station is meeting the needs of the market that the station serves.

In the past many months, the most noticeable change at KRFC has been the move from block programming, with almost nothing but specialty shows during prime time hours of 6A-6P, to a broader “mix” format.  The other most noticeable change has been a somewhat dramatic increase in how much Colorado music has been aired.  KRFC stands out today as one of the top 2 stations in the state where it comes to how much Colorado music they broadcast.

John Hayes has been a professional colleague and friend of mine for many many years.  We competed against each other as programmers working literally across the street from each other back in the late 80s… he at KTCL, I at KSQI (K-SKY).  He was also the program director for Jack FM, part of the group that also launched KCUV in Denver.   I don’t doubt one bit we’ll be hearing his voice on a frequency or online sometime soon.

In one last bit of news this month – welcome KDUR (Durango) to the group of reporting stations from around the state.  I got to spend some time with music director / interim program director Jon Lynch recently on the phone.  He was very excited about the Colorado acts that make their way to Durango – and shared that there are lots of titles he doesn’t have and would like — they’ve got a “bin” in the control room for Colorado music, and the on air personalities do love to dig into it.  So, get thee some music to Jon and the crew at KDUR (Durango).   Good to have Durango repped now on the list … :)

News Notes & Spins – June 1 2012

Last month I focused my personal editorial on the fact that, statewide, community/public radio programmers are broadly unaware of music from here in Colorado – a predicament I believed might ultimately only be addressed by legislation dictating the level of local content on our over-the-air broadcast stations …much in the same vein as Canada’s mandate that 35% of their content be Canadian.

The prevailing argument against that idea is that Canada’s law is national and not something that in general we have to worry about in the US – as the VAST amount of music being aired is from the US … and that on a state by state basis, there would be no way for most states to implement such a mandate on their broadcast stations, since most states don’t have sufficient content to make the idea fly.

Since last month’s rant I’ve given this issue considerable thought.  I’ve experimented a bit and asked a question or two – all in an effort to find a way to address this issue without more government intervention, something I am wary of in the least and generally opposed to in principle.  I found two issues to be prevalent, knowledge and access.

There is no simple way for on-air programmers to discover Colorado talent.  There is no website such as a Reverbnation or MySpace for Colorado, specifically dedicated to the music of our state, and no easy way to sort artists by state at Reverbnation, Bandcamp, or other online music services.  Further, content would have to be filtered for language, something a lot of artists don’t think of when posting content online – since they obviously don’t have to.  There are no language prohibitions online.

Solving the knowledge dilemma is not easy.  Locally, it would mean that someone at a station has to be hip to what’s going on statewide, and then be able to educate on-air djs/programmers.  Even if a centralized Colorado specific version of something like MySpace were created, it would require that programmers know about it – not something that most djs would do, I’m sorry to say.

Most programmers, especially those who are “older” I’ve discovered, are more interested in playing stuff from their personal collections, than searching out new music they are not familiar with.  So, what if we who are in the business of getting people to know “force-fed” product to individual djs, by sending it to them directly; would that help in some measurable way?  It’s possible, and something worth considering as more and more independent programmers appear resistant to playing what exists in station libraries, instead preferring what they discover themselves.

The other issue is access.  Physical or digital?  I asked that question of the music and program directors at stations around the state …the answer?  Both.  Most stations are not yet outfitted to easily catalog and air digital content.  Most have not yet digitized their physical product sufficiently enough to do away with their existing cd libraries.  And most find that their djs (especially their older djs) are uncomfortable with trying to access and air digitized content with existing studio “dj assist” software – preferring the older technologies such as compact discs, cassette tapes, and vinyl records.

One option that’s been floated is the idea of creating a cloud based solution, enabling one or more stations to access content they already own or can access and share collectively.  This as opposed to needing large hard drives and specialized software on site to deal with large collections – in some cases, collections that contain over 50,000 album titles.

Interestingly, however, it seems that most of the djs at those stations have internet access, a laptop, or some other tool used to collect, store, and play digital content, leading further I believe to the individualization of the content being broadcast.  Some djs I’ve learned are streaming content from online services – something that station management may have to look into as a possible violation of DMCA rules.  It is an interesting idea however – it just makes me wonder what the legal ramifications are.

All that said – we are among the lucky places where local content receives as much notice and airplay as it does here in Colorado – and for which I personally am very grateful.  Thank you to all the programmers, music directors, and on-air talent who take the time and make the effort to support … much love my friends.

In station news this month –

Check out the music blog at KWMV (Westcliffe) … http://musicblog.kwmv.org/ or easily access it by a big red button on their homepage at www.kwmv.org.  They also have a new late night dj show with one of the Custer County Youth Radio alumni, The Midnight Hour with Cameron “Carmine” Kessler on Saturday morning from midnight to 2 a.m.

Lindsay Isbell, the music director at KSJD (Cortez) writes in this month: “We have moved!  We are now thrilled to be working and broadcasting from our new home at the corner of Main and Market streets in downtown Cortez.”  The new [physical/street] address is 2 E. Main St. Cortez, CO 81321.  However, all mail should be sent to P. O. Box 116 in Cortez.

Tedi Gillespie at KAFM (Grand Junction) reports that “I have now been named Executive Director.  I was serving as Interim for 4 months and now they’ve made it official and permanent.”  The station got a power increase to 300 watts last November and a second phase of improvements will mean renovations to the control and production studios.   Tedi also reports that KAFM will be looking for a Program Director in the near future.

From Sally Kane, executive director at KVNF in Paonia:  KVNF has been selected to be an incubator station for the Association of Independents in Radio “Localore” grant.  Our project is called “iseechange.” It’s an experiment in citizen science reporting. We’re hosting a community   conversation with citizens and scientists talking about what’s changing in their backyards and across the state with regard to weather and climate. Julia Kumari Drapkin is the multi media producer who joined our station for a year to coordinate the project.  The content is available to be shared with RMCR (Rocky Mountain Community Radio) stations statewide. More info is available at http://www.kvnf.org/.
