This Just In –
The 14th Annual NedFest in Nederland, CO is only weeks away and the festival will feature the first time collaboration of longtime music friends and colleagues Keller Williams, Kyle Hollingsworth, Steve Kimock and Dave Watts. The three-day outdoor music, arts and microbrew festival features bluegrass, jazz, jam and world music, making this fusion a natural fit to close out the weekend.
Now that’s just seriously badass.

MUSICIANS UNITE TO HELP COLORADO’S HOMELESS
MUSICIANS UNITE TO HELP COLORADO’S HOMELESS
Local non-profit, Musicians In Action (M.I.A.), is hosting, in conjunction with CBID (Colfax Business Improvement District) and the Upper Colfax Root 40 Music Fest and Outdoor Stage and Canned Food Drive for the homeless on Saturday 4/28/2012 in the parking lot of THE GLBT Community Center at Colfax and Lafayette. This will be an all day Music Fest from 11a-8p with bands volunteering their talent.
BANDS playing the M.I.A. Stage: NEMESYS, The Pirate Signal, MF Ruckus, Hot Apostles, Synergy, The Hits, Gription and more
There is an influx of canned food donations around Thanksgiving time. Local organizations that assist our homeless are running very low and M.I.A. would like to step up to the plate and donate.
The Gathering Place http://www.tgpdenver.org/ will receive the donations from this event. The Gathering Place is Denver’s only daytime drop-in center for women and children who are experiencing homelessness and poverty and provide free meals every day.
The homeless community is making the news on a regular basis, especially as of late due to the controversy of the proposed city ordinance to prohibit “urban camping” which would cause the arrest of many, simply for not having a more suitable place to sleep.
WHO Is M.I.A.? Musicians In Action (aka M.I.A.) is a Denver based nonprofit that mobilizes musicians to perform, collaborate and volunteer to help aid Colorado’s homeless population. Our Board of Directors consists of musicians and individuals passionate about making a contribution to the Denver Music Scene, as well as those concerned about philanthropic efforts for our community. We are out to raise awareness and debunk widespread myths about the homeless.
We work well with musicians because they tend to understand the plight of the homeless – many musicians themselves are “couch surfers” – sacrificing the comforts of a 9-5 job so that they can hone their craft and create freely. For that, we are of course grateful. They know what it means to stretch a dollar. We do what we can to promote and raise the visibility of the bands we work with. Showing an interest in the community helps artists and bands gain exposure. If you look at bands like The Flobots and Rise Against, you can see that they have had a great deal of success in this arena.
WHAT WE DO: The primary duties of M.I.A. involve gathering food, clothing, toiletries, diapers, linens and other needed items that are distributed to organizations in need.
You will see M.I.A. at shows across genres, working alongside artists to host “drives” for these items, as well as basic fundraising.
You will see M.I.A. volunteering at places like Senior Support Services, Urban Peak, The Empowerment Program, Joshua Station, The Gathering Place & The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless every month.
You will see M.I.A. at local high profile music events, promoting bands and raising awareness regarding the homeless.
BANDS playing the M.I.A. Stage: NEMESYS, The Pirate Signal, MF Ruckus, Hot Apostles, Synergy, The Hits, Gription and more
VITAMIN WATER will be Sponsoring and hydrating this event.
We will also have Live Artists performing and various other activities.

COLORADO BLUES SOCIETY’S INAUGURAL JOHN-ALEX MASON SCHOLARSHIP FUND BENEFIT CONCERT
I don’t promote too many events here. I wholeheartedly endorse this one. John-Alex Mason was a good friend and brother in music to many of us in Colorado, and throughout the world he traveled in. His mission was to share his music – his own unique telling of the blues. To that end, he inspired school kids and grown ups. I am thrilled that the Colorado Blues Society has started this scholarship in John-Alex’s name and legacy. If you’re able, please contribute to this very excellent cause.

Colorado bluesman, John-Alex Mason (November 30, 1975 – October 19, 2011) was beloved and respected throughout the blues music community, and that was particularly true here in Colorado. Since his sudden and unexpected death this Fall, many in the state have been looking for a way to honor his memory and help continue the educational work he felt was so important.
John-Alex Mason took high school students from Colorado Springs to Mississippi for extended field trips that sometimes included visiting Memphis and New Orleans.
The Colorado Blues Society, a 501-c-3 nonprofit organization, will use the money raised in John-Alex Mason’s memory to further the blues music education of young Colorado artists.
KRFC volunteers and staff are hard at work compiling interviews, videos and photos of John-Alex Mason for the live show and simulcast in the week leading up to the event. If fans or acquaintances have a memory they would like to share, KRFC invites them to post it on their Facebook page <facebook.com/krfcradio> or email <andrew@krfcfm.org>.
Silent Auction items may be sent to KRFC c/o John Alex Mason Scholarship Fund; 619 S. College Ave. #4; Ft. Collins, CO 80524.

News – Oct 19 2011
Two quick items to cover today. I love reporting on good news. I am happy to report a great career advancement for Scott Aller, who I believe I remember as a teenage musician in Fort Collins. I wish I did not have to report on the passing of a great friend in music here in Colorado, John-Alex Mason.
According to already published reports, John-Alex Mason passed away on Monday Oct 17. He had gone into the hospital to have a benign cancer removed, began to bleed internally, suffered cardiac arrest, slipped into a coma and never recovered. John-Alex gave us some of the most emotionally direct and original blues in the state. His most recent album, Juke Joint Thunderclap, has been among the most popular in-state blues releases of 2011 since it came out.
Scott Aller (Boulder Acoustic Society, 5280 Live) sent out an early morning email detailing upcoming changes in his professional life. Congrats to all of Scott’s successes … here’s the text of the email he sent out.
Hey Friends and Family
Some of you may have been aware that I have spent the last month working for Colorado Public Radio as the Promotions Director for their new indie-rock station called OpenAir. However, over the weekend I accepted an incredible offer from Live Nation/Ticketmaster for their Business Development Manager position. My immediate responsibilities will be to lead strategic vertical mergers, acquisitions, and/or partnerships. Though I will remain based in Denver, I will be required to travel quite a often.
What Will Happen To 5280 Live?
Michael Schenkelberg and I will continue to operate our arts consulting firm as a side project; similar to the way it’s always been. For the next few months I will be taking a step back from its operations until I can get acclimated with the new position. Landon Hornbeck will be stepping in my place and taking over contacts and RFPs. I will still be leading our next two major projects: 3D Video Mapping at Macy’s in Loveland’s Centerra Shopping Center on November 4th and 5th, and Denver Arts Week “Under The Glasstop” performance on November 6th at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. You may reach Michael and Landon at Mschenkelberg@5280live.net or Landon@5280live.net.
What Will Happen to Boulder Acoustic Society?
Neil, Scott, Aaron and I have collectively decided that we wanted to tour less coast-to-coast. This decision was made before the Ticketmaster offer. We will continue to play regionally on weekends and travel to festivals on occasion. We still love playing together, but we we’ve lost our compassion for 24 hr drives, fast food, and couch surfing. SOOOOO stay tuned for local/regional shows near some of you.

Pickin’ Productions have some very exciting news.
Got this in the email this morning … congratulations to our friends at Pickin’ Productions for making the move to go national.
We’re merging with Quicksilver Productions!
Starting at the turn of the year, Pickin’ Productions will join forces with the wonderful Martha Dantzic and Quicksilver Productions. With our home base in Washington DC, we’re now able to seamlessly book our fine acts in great venues from coast to coast. I will be acting as the Western agent, while Martha will be the Queen of the East. But during this time of transition, Martha will be concentrating on building the infrastructure and I will be booking for all eight of our acts around the country. That’s why I’m writing today – it’s festival booking season! As well as concert series’ and all sorts of other good stuff. We’d like to share our newest bands, as well as highlight your old favorites from Pickin’. If any stand out to you, let us know and we’ll send you their latest CDs.
Thanks for all your support through the years. This is a big leap for both Martha and me. Our goal is to create an agency that stands out in the industry as high quality from end to end. We feel like we’re off to a good start, but please let us know any feedback, suggestions or thoughts you might have for us. We’re all ears.
Please visit www.quicksilverproductions.net to hear samples and watch videos of all our acts.
